Connie spends much of her time creating art, both paintings and sculpture. Her work is in many private and public locations throughout Central Illinois, the United States and as) far away as Germany. She has also been helping students of all ages express themselves and find their own unique voice through the visual arts and singing for the last 20 years.

She has traveled to the Amazon often and much of her artwork is inspired by visiting remote and wild places. She also enjoys exploring midwestern habitats. She creates sculptural work in ceramic, glass and bronze, and also two dimensional work such as print making, drawing and painting.

She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Art Education and spent 19 years teaching art, inspiring students of all ages to explore their creativty and express themselves through art. Gretchen and her husband Dan live on a farm in PawPaw with their 3 boys, where they enjoy spending time outdoors and sharing their love of nature and art with others.

With a B.S. in Biology and an M.S. in Secondary Education, Dell has spent 19 years teaching physics in public schools and now teaches at a private school that celebrates and uplifts the diverse backgrounds and talents of its students. She also teaches a class at Indiana University on Outdoor Survival. Dell is an avid adventure racer, enjoying mountain biking, trekking, paddling, and navigating with a map and compass, which is the perfect intersection of science, creativity, and exploration! When she’s not outdoors, she can usually be found knitting, reading, or spending time with her husband and their two cats. She looks forward to sharing her curiosity, love of learning, and enthusiasm for discovery with campers this summer after a 10 year hiatus from ASIW!

His courses have included Paleontology, Geology, Astronomy, Biology, AP Environmental, AP Computer Science, and Earth/Space Science. He is currently teaching at Harmony School in Bloomington, IN. He received his Bachelor degree in Philosophy and East Asian Studies and then his Masters of Science in Education from Indiana University. Shortly after graduation Steve and his wife Dell spent nearly two years living semi-primitively in the wilderness. He has a deep love of the natural world and continues to spend as much time as he can outdoors. He and his wife Dell are also adjunct instructors at Indiana University where they have taught primitive survival classes since 2003. In his free time, Steve enjoys adventure racing, caving, traveling the world and working with electronics and computers.
Read MoreDoug is the former Peoria Zoo’s herpetologist with nearly 40 years experience. He has worked with many highly endangered species and visited over 500 zoos. He is currently on the board of the Peoria Academy of Sciences, the Central Illinois Herpetology Socieity, and is also a board member for the Sun Foundation. He started volunteering at the Sun Foundation in 1981 as an instructor on reptiles and amphibians and loves every minute of it! He continues to lecture on his zoo life experiences. He is the current scholarship chairman for the Academy, and enjoys sending out grants and being outside.

She enjoys learning about animals, ecology, and the natural world around her. She holds a Master’s degree in Education and is both a Licensed School Counselor and Licensed Professional Counselor. A former Sun Foundation camper herself, Laurel has since returned as a teaching assistant, volunteer, and guest instructor. Now, she’s excited to carry forward her father’s legacy while bringing her own blend of experience and creativity to the program. For the past decade, she has also served as the Production Director for the Historic Springdale Cemetery Tours, where she combines storytelling and history to both inspire and educate future generations.

He has taught at various institutions, including the Sun Foundation’s Art & Science in the Woods (ASIW) program, the Contemporary Art Center of Peoria, and Lakeview Museum. An alumnus of Illinois State University, Adam continues to create art in his home studio. Throughout his career, he has worked and mentored under artists such as Preston Jackson, Jere Allen, Julie Wasson, and Tracy Snowman. In addition to his artistic endeavors, Adam is a chef, IT professional, cyclist, and proud father.

In her twenties, she attended Tom Brown’s Tracking, Nature, and Wilderness Survival School and lived semi-primitively as a caretaker at a primitive camp in the Pine Barrens of New Jersey. She later served as Director of Concentric Rings Community Education Programs and Coyote Tracks Summer Camps for the Children of the Earth Foundation, where she helped youth connect with nature through wilderness skills and awareness. An avid endurance athlete, Pamela has competed in numerous ultra marathons ranging from 50 km to 100 miles, including completing the Haliburton 100-mile race in under 30 hours. While raising her family, she, her husband Geoff, and their Alaskan Malamute, Taq, canoed 10,000 km across Canada—a six-year expedition from Victoria, BC, to Quebec City, QC (www.canoeacrosscanada.ca). She spends summers at her family’s off-grid cabin in the wilds of Killarney, Ontario, and winters skiing in the Rocky Mountains from her home in Calgary, Alberta.
